Fashion Trend: Nail Art

Nail art is one of the biggest fashion trends in Hollywood right now. Celebrities like Rihanna, Fergie  (Black Eyed Peas), Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj have been seen sporting various types of nail art. A popular nail polish collection, OPI, has even come out with collections inspired by celebrities like Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, the Kardashians (of the reality hit show Keeping Up with the Kardashians) and even movies like Pirates of the Caribbean and the Muppets Show.

As the name implies, nail art has fully evolved to become a growing art form among women. There are different types of nail art available today:

  • Airbrushed Nail Art.
  • Colorblocking nail polishes and stiletto nails – very sharp nails shaped like triangles.
  • Free-style Nail Art. An artist paints freely on her chosen canvas – the nails.
  • Nail Art Stickers or Nail Decals. These are small stickers that are placed bare or on colored nails.
  • 3D Nail Art. This type of nail art has been popular for years in Asian countries, especially in South Korea. A popular form of 3D nail art is Fimo nail art. Fimo nail art involves the use of handmade ceramic nail art products. Fimo is a brand name of the polymer clay being used. These are like cookie dough sticks which are cut very thinly using a sharp knife and then glued to the nail – even piling them on top of another, achieving a very 3D look.

    • Nail art has evolved from just experimenting with nail polish colors to experimenting and perfecting rhinestone applications, using foils or crystals, lace and metallics.
